Dr. Laura-Anne Furlong, Assistant Professor in Biomechanics in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University (UK), will visit Delsys on Thursday August 8th to present her research.

Electromyography as a tool to inform athlete health and performance
Knowing how muscle function relates to movement is essential when working with athletes, be it for maximizing performance, investigating the effects of equipment modification, or optimizing long-term musculoskeletal health through reduction or avoidance of injury. EMG is a tool to acquire these insights in both able-bodied and para-athletes. The purpose of this talk to provide an overview of ongoing research in this area and highlight associated methodological issues which require consideration in future research. The challenges of bridging the gap between researchers, practitioners and coaches will also be discussed, specifically focusing on the presentation of these data to these stakeholder groups.

Dr. Laura-Anne Furlong

Dr Laura-Anne Furlong is an Assistant Professor in Biomechanics in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University, UK, where she is based in the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine. Her PhD work at the University of Limerick, Ireland focused on assessment of in vivo plantarflexor mechanics during stretch-shortening cycles before she moved to Loughborough University for her postdoctoral research focusing on soft tissue mechanics during high impact tasks as part of a collaboration with Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. She became a faculty member at Loughborough in December 2015. Her research focuses on investigating muscle function during movement, specifically walking and running, by combining non-invasive in vivo measures of muscle and tendon structure and function with biomechanical analyses of movement, force and coordination. She was a recipient of a New Balance Footwear Award in 2018 and awarded the Hans Gros Emerging Researcher Award from the International Society of Biomechanics in Sport in 2019.
